Using Thermographic Scans (Infrared Pyrometers)
Your Early Warning System

Infrared, thermographic scans are an inexpensive and accurate way of locating "hot spots" within walls, conduits, lighting panels, disconnects, switch gear, starters, motor control centres, etc. These electrical "hot spots" indicate sources of potential problems, and assessing them is a job for an experienced, skilled electrician.

While industrial facilities have been using thermographic scanning for years, the benefits to other types of properties are only starting to be realized. Property managers who have a good policy of preventative maintenance are using the scans in malls, office and apartment buildings, and other buildings, as well as industrial complexes.

Here are some samples of what a "hot spot" may indicate:

1. In panels or general wiring:
   • defective switch or circuit breakers
   • switches or circuit breakers that have a poor bus connection
   • poor grounding
   • loose wire terminations
   • high resistance joints or terminations
   • a potential difference between neutral and ground
   • many circuits sharing the same neutral (computer circuits should have a separate neutral for each single phase)
2. In a transformer:
   • a loose connection
   • poor grounding
   • poor air circulation
   • a high resistance caused by oxidation at a termination
   • an undersized transformer
   • a transformer that is saturated, generating harmonics
3. In a motor:
   • defective bearings
   • a motor subject to harmonics
   • bad pulley alignment
   • a 3 phase motor with one high resistance phase
   • an undersized motor

Thermographic scanning can help an electrician identify a source of potential trouble which, if ignored, could cause severe property damage or loss of production.

Generally speaking, a thermographic scan is inexpensive. Fees start at as little as $99 and include a written report.
